An old crossroads
Settlers arrived around 1810, drawn by rich soil, and a post office and schoolhouse followed in 1819. The legislature incorporated the town on June 15, 1821, though it became unincorporated again in the mid-1800s. The crossroads at U.S. 231/431, Joe Quick Road and West Limestone Road was an early travel hub. Nobody is sure where the name came from: one theory credits the hazelnut bushes, another a store owner's wife.
Storms
An F5 tornado struck Hazel Green on April 3, 1974. Two tornadoes hit on March 2, 2012, and an EF3 on April 1, 2023 killed one person. See storm and fallen trees.
