A cut stump can sit in a yard for years. Grinding takes it down below the surface so the spot can be seeded, mulched or planted, and Alabama Extension recommends it after a pine infested by bark beetles is taken down.

Grinding or pulling
Angi's 2026 stump guide describes two approaches. Pulling a stump out whole suits smaller, younger stumps light enough to remove, but it leaves a large hole to fill. Grinding suits bigger, older stumps that can't come out without tearing up the lawn or a path, though it may leave the surrounding roots in place. Standard grinding goes below the surface to take out the core root clump; surface-level grinding stops at soil level and costs less, which can be enough for a stump that has been dead a long time.

Call 811 first
Grinding goes below ground, where water, gas, power and communication lines run. Alabama 811 wants locate requests in a minimum of 2 to 10 working days ahead of excavation (the request day doesn't count), and digging can start only once every utility has answered. Requests go in online or by phone: 811 inside Alabama, or 800-292-8525 from anywhere. The Alabama Public Service Commission calls it a free resource for homeowners and contractors alike.
You can pre-mark the area around the stump for the locators. If you use paint, Alabama 811 says to use only white; the other colors are reserved for marking existing lines.
Grindings and soil
Plan what happens to the pile of chips and loose soil a grinder leaves. Huntsville's curbside service lists dirt among the things it doesn't collect, and debris from a contractor's work isn't picked up either, so ask whether cleanup is part of the price.
